Story of the Wikipedia Logo Review

Wikipedia was established in 2001 and instead of an official logo Jimbo Wales displayed the American flag as a substitute for the official logo. This was only on temporary terms and was never supposed to be used permanently. The initial Wikipedia Logo comprised of an icon which was originally presented as a Nupedia logo design. As this logo was perceived as better than the American flag since it was original and unique. So the logo design was used as the official logo for eight months and was further used on some special pages like the search results. However, there were some problems when the logo was used on the English version of Wikipedia mainly because the server kept flickering causing trouble shooting of the page almost through out the process. In 2003, a contest was held in order to find a logo which would best fit all of the languages in Wikipedia.

In accord, after voting in a two stage process, the logo design by Paul Stansifer was chosen by a significant majority. Stansifer’s Wikipedia logo was an earth globe made of chamfered puzzle pieces of many colors. The puzzle pieces signified the constant growth of Wikipedia and also the globe represented the unified experience of all languages. The puzzle pieces also comprised of text links. This version was again modified into the silver globe with one letter links of puzzled pieces with also the removal of all colors. This is the current lightened version of the Wikipedia logo design.
